Zonas FAO de pesca de la península Ibérica
En la década de los 50, la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO) comenzó a desarrollar un sistema de zonificación para la gestión y el monitoreo de la pesca a nivel mundial y dividió el mundo marítimo en distintas áreas llamadas Zonas de Pesca de la FAO (comúnmente llamadas Zonas FAO). A lo largo de los años, este sistema ha sido revisado y modificado para adaptarse a los cambios en la distribución de las especies, las prácticas de pesca y otros factores relevantes.
Hay varias razones clave para su establecimiento:
- Gestión pesquera: Dividir el mundo en zonas pesqueras permite a los países y organizaciones internacionales coordinar y gestionar mejor la explotación de los recursos pesqueros. Esto incluye la implementación de regulaciones, la fijación de cuotas de captura y la conservación de las poblaciones de peces.
- Monitoreo y seguimiento: Al dividir el océano en zonas más pequeñas y definidas, se facilita la recopilación de datos sobre la captura de peces, la actividad pesquera y la salud de los ecosistemas marinos y, por tanto, la realización de estadísticas. Esto es crucial para comprender y evaluar el estado de las poblaciones de peces y tomar decisiones informadas sobre la gestión pesquera.
- Cooperación internacional: Las zonas de pesca también fomentan la cooperación entre países y organizaciones internacionales en la gestión de los recursos pesqueros compartidos. Al delimitar claramente las áreas, se pueden establecer acuerdos y regulaciones que aborden los desafíos comunes de la pesca, como la pesca excesiva y la conservación de especies en peligro.
Las zonas de pesca de la FAO se basan en criterios geográficos, oceanográficos y biológicos, teniendo en cuenta la distribución de las especies de peces, las corrientes oceánicas, las características del fondo marino y otras variables relevantes para la pesca y la conservación marina, como las artes de pesca utilizadas en cada zona, que tienen impactos diferentes en el ecosistema marino y en las poblaciones de peces.

Al norte y suroeste de la península ibérica, se encuentra la Zona de Pesca FAO 27, el Atlántico Norte. Esta zona comprende también una vasta extensión de aguas de diversos países del norte de Europa y alberga una gran diversidad de especies marinas, sustentando importantes pesquerías comerciales. Estas aguas son conocidas por su abundancia de peces de alta calidad y valor nutricional, como el bacalao, la sardina, el salmón, la caballa, la bacaladilla, el jurel y la merluza; así como deliciosos mariscos altamente apreciados en la gastronomía europea, como el bogavante, los berberechos, las navajas, los mejillones, las almejas, las nécoras o las cigalas.
